My first time in Williamsburg, VA was a class trip in 7th grade. My memories include sweating until I cried, wondering how these characters wore wool clothing On The Face of the Sun and guesstimating how quickly I would’ve thrown myself into a fire pit to end the “fun” of living in 1620’s colonial America.
Life without air conditioning was not for 12 year old me.
Jess moved to Williamsburg at the age of 10, when his father joined the Marine Biology Department at William and Mary. When he took me back to “The Burg” for the first time my touring included the baseball fields he played on and Lafayette High School where he once was quarterback.
Truly riveting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat stuff, naturally.
We ended up getting married at St. Bede’s Church on Ironbound Road. Our wedding night was spent rockin’ it out at The Greene Leafe Tavern with a few dozen of our closest and hardly sober friends. Fun fact: I’ve been to “The [Green] Leafe” and have never been able to walk out on my own. Shots. Shudder. I’m just classy like that.
We have had many an amazing meal at various restaurants around Williamsburg, from pizza at Sal’s to She Crab Soup at Berrett’s. The Cheese Shop has always been Jess’ favorite as a tub of their house dressing is an amazing treat with some bread ends mixed in. Sadly, our wedding reception site is now a dorm for William and Mary but, just up the street, you can enjoy the world’s best hot chocolate at Blue Talon Bistro. Bonus: they have very fun and kitschy Julia Child reruns playing over the bar.
Go for the history, stay for the food. You can’t go wrong visiting Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown – the Historic Triangle! Our kids absolutely love visiting the Yorktown Victory Center, Jamestown Settlement, and all of Colonial Williamsburg. The adults are sure to have fun as well but the best comes later in the day with all the amazing food and drink. More to come on Williamsburg and other great spots …
