Tupelo Honey- As Sweet As It Sounds

“She’s as sweet as Tupelo honey, she’s an angel of the first degree”

So go the lyrics of Van Morrison’s 1971 classic.

The apply-named Tupelo Honey in Knoxville’s Market Square certainly lives up to its sweet title. We have loved meals there as a family of 5 and as a troop of 20+. They are so accommodating both inside and on their (heated!) patio. I mention the heat because we have visited Knoxville regularly for the past six years to watch Jess’ younger brothers Luc and Andre play baseball for the Volunteers. We once took them and a few teammates to Tupelo Honey for the World’s Coldest Dinner. At least it felt like that to their friend and teammate who joined us. He hails from Miami, Florida, so those heaters came in handy!!

Tupelo Honey exists all over the U.S., currently holding 13 states and about 20 locations, with Ohio to join the list soon. You would never guess it has more than one location as their hospitality and menu options seem as “southern or local” as you can find. They bill themselves as serving “scratch-made southern food” and I can attest to their shrimp and grits as being the best I’ve ever had. Jess dies for their chicken and waffles and I’ve never eaten a salad there that I didn’t adore. My girls love their hint of lavender lemonade and have been known to down their mac and cheese in record setting time.

A pretty cool aspect of Tupelo Honey is their philanthropy, namely taking care of their own. They’ve begun the Tupelo Honey Relief and Development Fund, which has brought in $400,000 for their employees in 2021 alone. You can contribute to this fund by simply purchasing the biscuits for a cause, buttermilk biscuits with blackberry jam and butter. Make sure to order a few, your tastebuds and table mates will thank you!

So … whether you are in Knoxville, Indy’, Grand Rapids, Denver (what!?), Pittsburgh, Myrtle Beach, Frisco, Va. Beach, or Milwaukee (another big what!?), among other places, you can find some amazing and authentic shrimp n’ grits, biscuits, warmth, seating for 4 – 20, and a great “southern” atmosphere with food to compliment. Try Tupelo Honey whenever you get the chance, with or without kids!
