Shortly after meeting Jess, I found myself doing some incognito snooping around his law school apartment. It was the size of a broom closet so the snoop wasn’t difficult. Take away; he had more shower/ hair/ body products than I did. It was almost a deal killer but I was poor and needed someone to buy me dinner. But I digress…
I mention this abundance of products because this need for extreme fanciness passed down to each of my three children. They’ve never passed up an opportunity to ransack a Target. This fancy streak also extends to restaurant and food choices as they attempt to bleed me dry er, enjoy life. On a fairly recent trip to Chicago, Jess decided the girls should select our restaurant for the evening. As we had been shopping that day and traversing the better part of the city, the girls settled on Joe’s Stone Crab. I think I broke out into a cold sweat when they announced this but there’s wine to be had so I was up for the challenge of taking my motley crew to fine city dining.
As we waltz in the doors, I quickly realize we are harboring the only people under the age of 35 at our table. And everyone is in business attire and drinking tea with their pinkies out. Kidding on that last part but you catch my drift. Most of the eyes in the room glance us over as we are seated smack dab at a table in the middle of the room.
“THEY GAVE US THREE FORKS!!!”
It quickly becomes abundantly clear that we’ve never been in this end zone.
“THEY GAVE US HOT TOWELS!!!”
After a round of chilled seafood, all three of my children attempt full on showers while seated.
The waitstaff and surrounding tables seemed amused and luckily everyone kept their shoes on. Hadley had been known to throw them back in the day. Good times. We not only thoroughly enjoyed the appetizers, seafood and steak entrees but a chocolate dessert to boot. Adding to the experience were great coloring activities for the kids (provided by Joe’s) and an awesome, circular booth so that no child could “escape” and sort of obstructing us from the business folks’ views. Whoever would have thought that Joe’s Stone Crab could be an awesome, pleasant experience for a family with 3 young kids!!?? But it most certainly was incredible. Give it a try if you’re in Chicago, Las Vegas, Washington DC, or Miami.
